On the two categories of riba
Imam Muwaffaq al-Dīn Ibn Qudāmah al-Maqdisī (d. 1223)
What this source says
Riba is of two kinds: riba al-nasīʾa, which is the increase taken in exchange for the deferment of a debt, and riba al-faḍl, which is the excess taken in the immediate exchange of one commodity for the same commodity in unequal amounts. Both are prohibited by clear texts. The first is the riba of the Jāhiliyya, abolished by the Prophet ﷺ in the farewell pilgrimage. The second is the riba of the marketplace, addressed by the hadith of the six commodities. Every form of contemporary lending at interest is the first kind without ambiguity.
