How to read this page
Texts first, argument elsewhere
This page shows sources and nothing else. The argument built on them lives on The Why; the places scholars differ are on Where scholars differ. Three rules govern what appears here:
Verses are fetched, not typed
Arabic and the Saheeh International translation come from the quran.com API when the page is built, so no verse here was retyped by hand.
Hadith are copied, not paraphrased
Each hadith is the English text as it appears on its sunnah.com page, with the page's own spelling, narrator line and reference numbers.
Grades are shown as displayed
Where sunnah.com shows a grade it is repeated exactly (9 of 21); Bukhari and Muslim pages show none (12). 2 weak reports are included so you can see they are weak.
The Qurʾān
Every verse that names riba
Ten verses, in the order most readers meet them: the early Makkan statement in Sūrat al-Rūm, the two warnings in Āl ʿImrān and al-Nisāʾ, then the full passage in al-Baqarah (2:275 to 2:281), which also covers hardship and the Day of Return. 2:277, 2:279, 2:280 and 2:281 do not contain the word riba; they complete the passage. Translation: Saheeh International, with its bracketed clarifications kept.
- 30:39Sūrat al-RūmWhatever you give for interest will not increase with Allah
- 4:161Sūrat al-NisāʾTheir taking of usury while they had been forbidden from it
- 3:130Sūrat Āl ʿImrānDo not consume usury, doubled and multiplied
- 2:275Sūrat al-BaqarahThose who consume interest cannot stand
- 2:276Sūrat al-BaqarahAllah destroys interest and gives increase for charities
- 2:277Sūrat al-BaqarahThose who believe and do righteous deeds
- 2:278Sūrat al-BaqarahGive up what remains of interest, if you should be believers
- 2:279Sūrat al-BaqarahBe informed of a war from Allah and His Messenger
- 2:280Sūrat al-BaqarahIf someone is in hardship, then postponement until ease
- 2:281Sūrat al-BaqarahFear a Day when you will be returned to Allah
“And whatever you give for interest [i.e., advantage] to increase within the wealth of people will not increase with Allāh. But what you give in zakāh, desiring the face [i.e., approval] of Allāh - those are the multipliers.”
“And [for] their taking of usury while they had been forbidden from it, and their consuming of the people's wealth unjustly. And We have prepared for the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.”
“O you who have believed, do not consume usury, doubled and multiplied, but fear Allāh that you may be successful.”
“Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity. That is because they say, "Trade is [just] like interest." But Allāh has permitted trade and has forbidden interest. So whoever has received an admonition from his Lord and desists may have what is past, and his affair rests with Allāh. But whoever returns [to dealing in interest or usury] - those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein.”
“Allāh destroys interest and gives increase for charities. And Allāh does not like every sinning disbeliever.”
“Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds and establish prayer and give zakāh will have their reward with their Lord, and there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.”
“O you who have believed, fear Allāh and give up what remains [due to you] of interest, if you should be believers.”
“And if you do not, then be informed of a war [against you] from Allāh and His Messenger. But if you repent, you may have your principal - [thus] you do no wrong, nor are you wronged.”
“And if someone is in hardship, then [let there be] postponement until [a time of] ease. But if you give [from your right as] charity, then it is better for you, if you only knew.”
“And fear a Day when you will be returned to Allāh. Then every soul will be compensated for what it earned, and they will not be wronged [i.e., treated unjustly].”
The Sunnah
The hadith on riba, word for word
21reports in six groups. Each card is the text as sunnah.com shows it, including the page’s own typos, so that anyone can check it in one click. Where a hadith is long, the card shows the riba sentence and says so.
The abolition
In the Farewell Sermon the Prophet ﷺ cancelled the riba of the pre-Islamic period, starting with his own family's claims.
Ja'far b Muhammad reported on the authority of his father:
And the usury of she pre-Islamic period is abolished, and the first of our usury I abolish is that of 'Abbas b. 'Abd al-Muttalib, for it is all abolished.
One sentence of Jabir's long account of the Prophet's ﷺ Hajj; "she" is the page's own typo for "the".
Narrated Sulaiman b. 'Amr:
On the authority of his father: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say in the Farewell Pilgrimage: "Lo, all claims to usury of the pre-Islamic period have been abolished. You shall have your capital sums, deal not unjustly and you shall not be dealt with unjustly.
The report continues with the abolition of blood-vengeance claims.
Who is cursed
The same report in four collections: the one who takes riba, the one who pays it, the one who writes it and the witnesses.
Jabir said that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) cursed the accepter of interest and its payer, and one who records it, and the two witnesses, and he said:
They are all equal.
On the page the curse itself sits in the narrator line and the quoted words are the final three.
Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) cursed the one who accepted usury, the one who paid it, the witness to it, and the one who recorded it.
Ibn Mas'ud narrated:
"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) cursed the one who consumed Riba, and the one who charged it, those who witnessed it, and the one who recorded it."
The page adds: "The Hadith of 'Abdullah (bin Mas'ud) is a Hasan Sahih Hadith."
How grave it is
Riba among the seven destroying sins, the dream of the river of blood, and the degrees of riba.
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Avoid the seven great destructive sins." The people enquire, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! What are they? "He said, "To join others in worship along with Allah, to practice sorcery, to kill the life which Allah has forbidden except for a just cause, (according to Islamic law), to eat up Riba (usury), to eat up an orphan's wealth, to give back to the enemy and fleeing from the battlefield at the time of fighting, and to accuse, chaste women, who never even think of anything touching chastity and are good believers.
Narrated Samura bin Jundab:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "This night I dreamt that two men came and took me to a Holy land whence we proceeded on till we reached a river of blood, where a man was standing, and on its bank was standing another man with stones in his hands. The man in the middle of the river tried to come out, but the other threw a stone in his mouth and forced him to go back to his original place. So, whenever he tried to come out, the other man would throw a stone in his mouth and force him to go back to his former place. I asked, 'Who is this?' I was told, 'The person in the river was a Riba-eater."
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
"There are seventy degrees of usury, the least of which is equivalent to a man having intercourse with his mother."
It was narrated from 'Abdullah that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
"There are seventy-three degrees of usury."
‘Abdallah, son of Hanzala who was washed by the angels*, reported God's Messenger as saying, "A dirham which a man knowingly receives in usury is more serious than thirty-six acts of fornication”.
The page adds: "Ahmad and Daraqutni transmitted it." and a Baihaqi addition. The grade line shown is al-Albani's.
What counts as riba
The reports behind the two kinds: excess in like-for-like exchange, and delay.
Abi Qilabah reported:
I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) forbidding the sale of gold by gold, and silver by silver, and wheat by wheat, and barley by barley, and dates by dates, and salt by salt, except like for like and equal for equal. So he who made an addition or who accepted an addition (committed the sin of taking) interest.
The words of 'Ubada b. Samit, inside a longer account of a dispute with Mu'awiya.
Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
Dates are to be paid for by dates, wheat by wheat, barley by barley, salt by salt, like for like, payment being made on the spot. He who made an addition or demanded an addition, in fact, dealt in usury except in case where their classes differ.
Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Do not sell gold for gold unless equivalent in weight, and do not sell less amount for greater amount or vice versa; and do not sell silver for silver unless equivalent in weight, and do not sell less amount for greater amount or vice versa and do not sell gold or silver that is not present at the moment of exchange for gold or silver that is present.
Abu Salid al-Khudri reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
Do not sell gold for gold, except like for like, and don't increase something of it upon something; and don't sell silver unless like for like, and don't increase some thing of it upon something, and do not sell for ready money something to be given later.
"Abu Salid" is the page's own spelling of Abu Sa'id.
Narrated Abu Salih Az-Zaiyat:
I heard Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri saying, "The selling of a Dinar for a Dinar, and a Dirham for a Dirham (is permissible)." I said to him, "Ibn `Abbas does not say the same." Abu Sa`id replied, "I asked Ibn `Abbas whether he had heard it from the Prophet (ﷺ) s or seen it in the Holy Book. Ibn `Abbas replied, "I do not claim that, and you know Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) better than I, but Usama informed me that the Prophet had said, 'There is no Riba (in money exchange) except when it is not done from hand to hand (i.e. when there is delay in payment).' "
The Arabic shown is the Prophet's ﷺ words as the page gives them; the report around them is Abu Sa'id's exchange with Ibn 'Abbas.
Where it ends
Riba shrinks in the end, and a time will come when its dust reaches everyone. Two of these three are graded weak on the page.
It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
"There is no one who deals in usury a great deal (to increase his wealth) but he will end up with little (i.e., his wealth will be decreased)."
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“There will come a time when there will be no one left who does not consume usury (interest), and whoever does not consume it will nevertheless be affected by it."'
Graded weak on the page. Shown so the reader can see it is weak; not offered as proof.
Narrated AbuHurayrah:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: A time is certainly coming to mankind when only the receiver of usury will remain, and if he does not receive it, some of its vapour will reach him. Ibn Isa said: Some of its dust will reach him.
Graded weak on the page. Shown so the reader can see it is weak; not offered as proof.
Lawful earnings
Why the source of wealth matters for charity and for prayer.
Narrated `Aun bin Abu Juhaifa:
My father bought a slave who practiced the profession of cupping. (My father broke the slave's instruments of cupping). I asked my father why he had done so. He replied, "The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade the acceptance of the price of a dog or blood, and also forbade the profession of tattooing, getting tattooed and receiving or giving Riba, (usury), and cursed the picture-makers."
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "If one give in charity what equals one date-fruit from the honestly earned money and Allah accepts only the honestly earned money --Allah takes it in His right (hand) and then enlarges its reward for that person (who has given it), as anyone of you brings up his baby horse, so much s that it becomes as big as a mountain
The page's text ends without a closing quotation mark and contains the typo "so much s"; both are kept as shown.
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
O people, Allah is Good and He therefore, accepts only that which is good. And Allah commanded the believers as He commanded the Messengers by saying: "O Messengers, eat of the good things, and do good deeds; verily I am aware of what you do" (xxiii. 51). And He said: "O those who believe, eat of the good things that We gave you" (ii. 172). He then made a mention of a person who travels widely, his hair disheveled and covered with dust. He lifts his hand towards the sky (and thus makes the supplication): "O Lord, O Lord," whereas his diet is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, and his clothes are unlawful and his nourishment is unlawful. How can then his supplication be accepted?
A note on grades
What the grade labels mean here
- No grade shown: Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim pages on sunnah.com carry no grade line; both collections are accepted as authentic by the mainstream Sunni tradition. We do not add the word “Sahih” where the page does not.
- Sahih / Hasan (Darussalam or Al-Albani): the grade printed on the page, with the grader the page names.
- Da’if: graded weak on the page. Two reports about riba’s dust reaching everyone are shown because they are widely quoted; they are not offered as proof of anything.
- Numbers differ between editions. The reference used is the one in the page’s own “Reference” line, with the in-book reference beside it.
