Methodology and what this calculator assumes ↓
Zakāt rate: 2.5% on the total of zakatable wealth above the nisāb threshold, payable annually at the believer's chosen date.
Nisāb thresholds: 87.48 grams of gold OR 612.36 grams of silver, whichever the believer chooses as basis (weights are universal; only the currency price differs by market). Most contemporary scholars (Mufti Taqi, Qaraḍāwī) recommend silver-basis to widen the obligation.
Retirement-fund treatment: The conservative view (favoured by contemporary AAOIFI-aligned scholars) is that a retirement fund (super / 401(k) / SIPP / RRSP) is zakatable annually on its current balance. The minority view holds it is not zakatable until access. This calculator uses the conservative view.
Equities: The simpler Method B — full market value treated as trading goods — is used here. Method A (zakāt on the underlying zakatable assets of the company in proportion to your holding) is more technically accurate but operationally difficult; results are usually within 5–15%.
Metal prices: the per-market gold/silver figures are approximate, editable starting points — update them from a live spot source. We do not present them as authoritative.
What this is not: A fatwā. A guarantee. A replacement for a scholar's specific advice on your situation. The calculation is documented; the obligation is between you and God.
